The history of Annas Manor is deeply connected with the entire Latvian nation's history. Garlieb Merkel, the great researcher of Latvian life, arrived at the Manor in the year 1793 to work as a tutor for Tranze family’s children; the owners of the manor at that time.
Being the first Baltic German who enthusiastically defended the interests of the Latvian people, it was here in the Manor he collected facts for his written works to fight for the Latvian rights and abolition of serfdom.

Annas inspired Garlieb Merkel to write his essay "Latvians, especially in Vidzeme, at the end of the philosophical century”, published in Leipzig in 1796. These words belonging to his quill pen have now become as a motto for Annas: “Only in the lap of peace and freedom can a person’s soul flourish into its most beautiful blossoms — the arts”.
